Lissie and Adam’s sunshine-filled August bank holiday wedding at The Gardens in Yalding, was just spectacular. With Samba bands and singing waiters, this wedding was simply amazing! It truly was an honour to capture such a fun day for these guys! Check it all out below.
First names: Lissie and Adam
Ages: 29 and 34
Wedding date: 24 August 2019
Venue: The Gardens, Yalding
How did you guys meet, tell me all?
We met while traveling in 2009. Adam coming from Australia and Lissie from England, we checked into the same hostel in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We spent the whole of Carnival together going to Copacabana beach, watching the football at the Maracana and so many street parties.
How did you get engaged, is there a cool story?
About a year after we met, in which Lissie had gone to Leeds for university and Adam continued to travel the world landing in South Africa, Adam messaged Lissie on Facebook to see how she was getting on. After numerous weeks of chatting on MSN and skyping in the late hours of the night due to the time difference, Adam decided to divert his return journey back to Australia via England.
The day he landed, Lissie met him in Russell Square Park in London for a standard British picnic. They stayed in the same area, going to a local Chinese restaurant in the evening for their first official date (a very romantic all you can eat Chinese buffet). That night Adam asked Lissie to be his girlfriend.
Seven years later, just before Lissie’s birthday weekend in London, Adam decided to take her back to the same Chinese restaurant (we couldn’t believe they were still in business) for lunch, and then on to Russell Square Park which is where he got down on one knee in front of several runners, people passing by and many office workers on their lunch break and popped the question. We’ve been back to the same park a couple of times – it’ll always be a special place for us.
What made you choose your wedding venue, did you look at many?
When we first got engaged, Adam was working weekends so Lissie ended up looking around the majority with her mum and bridesmaids. In the end, she looked at around 15-20!
We’d agreed that, because Adam didn’t have much time on weekends, Lissie would only show him venues that felt perfect. The Gardens was the first and last venue that Adam ever looked around, which says it all.
We loved the mix of beautiful scenery within the gardens themselves, the rustic feel of the tipi and the modern element of the barn for the evening. It felt like The Gardens combined everything that we were looking for in a wedding venue.
What was the inspiration/theme of your wedding?
Having met in Brazil, that has been a key theme throughout. From stationery using the Brazil map outline and flag colours, to tables being named after attractions in Rio, we have tried to make a subtle yet obvious reference to where we met.
The samba band after the ceremony will hopefully give a slight clue!
What is your first song and why?
Bruno Mars – Just the Way You Are, performed acoustically by our band.
Ever since Adam came over to England in July 2010, which is when this song was released, this has always been ‘our song’. Despite it being a popular choice as a wedding song, it didn’t feel right to have anything else.
What would be your number one tip to other couples planning their wedding?
Planning is key – doing as much as you can in advance of the big day makes it so much less stressful in the lead up to it!
Also, another big tip – just do what you want to do. Don’t compare your weddings to others!
