A gorgeous wedding at Winters Barns during the COVID pandemic 2020. With social distancing in place and with weddings only just given the green light to take place, this was a beautiful day for Alice and Alex and was a real pleasure for me to capture their day. Check it all out here.
First names: Alex & Alice
Ages: Both 26
Wedding date: 01/08/2020
Venue: Winters Barns, Canterbury.
How did you guys meet, tell me all?
We kind of knew about each other at school through mutual friends, but the first time I actually recognised Alice was when I walked past Alice and her friends in Maidstone high street and she, clearly hyped up on sweets or fizzy drinks, shouted ‘OMG its Alex Darbon’ down the street at me and then walked off. The first time we spoke to each other was in an after school detention when Alice was asked to take off her makeup and I asked her genuinely concerned who had punched her in the face.
How did you get engaged, is there a cool story?
Alex and I got engaged on Christmas Day. I had absolutely no idea it was happening, all of my family were in on the secret, but didn’t know how Alex was actually going to pop the question. It was raining and I was snuggled up under a blanket watching Harry Potter, and Alex kept insisting that we go for a walk in the rain. Weird as Alex hates walks! Anyway, he managed to drag me outside, and he got down on one knee (in a puddle) and asked me to marry him. It was perfect. When we got back to the house, my family were doing the classic ‘act natural’ look! Fair to say that we really celebrated that Christmas Day and I have such happy memories of it.
What made you choose your wedding venue, did you look at many?
This was our second venue that we viewed. We was immediately drawn to this venue because of David, we thought he was a very warm friendly guy. Not to mention the barn itself including the gorgeous outside space. We could immediately see ourselves getting married there, it just felt right,
What was the inspiration/theme of your wedding?
We didn’t go by theme, we just knew we wanted it to be simplistic and elegant. We put a lot of trust in our suppliers. Not to mention that Alice has read an extortionate amount of bridal magazines, and travelled to each of our meetings with an updated moodboard designed by herself with cutouts from said magazines.
What is your first song and why?
Our first song was a happy hardcore song by Darren Styles called Your My Angel. Alex was a bit obsessed with this sort of music when we were about 15. We apologise in advance if anyone decides to listen to this.
What would be your number one tip to other couples planning their wedding?
Do it for yourselves and no-one else.
As a wedding photographer of a fair few years now and even as a photographer in general, this year, like for so many others has been incredibly tough. Usually, by August, I would have photographed 30 odd weddings! But this year, due to COVID 19, this was my first of the year. In fact, the first in over 8 months!
Then with less than 24 hours to go until the big day, Prime Minister Boris Johnson decided to change the COVID guidelines on wedding receptions! Which resulted in more unrest and confusion.
So to then photograph such a beautiful day, with some of the nicest people I could possibly meet, made the day one my most memorable. I certainly tip my hat to a couple who held strong throughout the unknown, to hold a truly wonderful wedding.
