Sally and Tom’s Cooling Castle Barn wedding, was simply gorgeous! This rustic boho-inspired wedding was super fun and a real joy to be a part of. From the elegant ceremony to the all-out party, this was a great day! Check it all out below.
First names: Sally and Tom
Ages: 33 and 32
Wedding date: 29th August 2021
Venue: Cooling Castle Barn, Rochester
How did you guys meet, tell me all?
Like the typical millenials we are, we met on a dating app – but it quickly turned out we had some close mutual friends, so we like to think we’d have bumped into one another eventually! The first date was at a pub on the hottest day of the year, and we both thought we’d stood the other up – Tom was sat inside, while Sally was waiting outside. Happily we did eventually spot each other!
How did you get engaged, is there a cool story?
Tom had planned to pop the question at the top of the Empire State Building on a holiday to New York – he’d checked online for times the observation deck would be quiet for a more personal proposal, and carried the ring box in his camera bag so it wouldn’t be discovered. After two attempts (one during the day, another at night) and a detour to the Chrysler Building, it was still jam-packed, so he decided to get down on one knee in the park where we spent our first afternoon in the city.
What made you choose your wedding venue, did you look at many?
Sally did all the heavy lifting here – Tom just drove to the venues! We both liked the idea of a location that was close to the sea, especially Sally as she grew up in East Sussex and went to University in Kent. Equally, we wanted something a little rustic and self-contained; Cooling Castle had everything we were looking for. It was the first one we actually went to visit in person (after looking at plenty online), and knew it was perfect once we’d been shown around.
What was the inspiration/theme of your wedding?
We’ve gone boho, incorporating lots of natural materials like wood, to represent Sally’s dad who was a carpenter. Our flowers will be a mix of English country garden flowers and foliage, and the reception barn will be covered in fairylights for a bit of an “outdoors indoors” vibe.
What is your first song and why?
“You Are the Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne. We really connect to the sentiment of the lyrics, and always say “you’re the best” to each other. Plus, it’s more of a ‘first dance song’ than Tina Turner!
What would be your number one tip to other couples planning their wedding?
It’s about you both, not other people’s preferences, so don’t feel pressured to do things a certain way. Your family and friends are always on hand to ask for help and spread some of the load – and remember you’re not a professional event planner, so it’s OK to feel like you’re not on top of it all (you’re normally doing a lot better than you think).
