Wedding date: 23 August 2019
Venue: Cooling Castle Barn, Rochester, Kent.
How did you guys meet, tell me all?
We met in a club on my 18th Birthday through mutual friends. We were then friends for 4 years before taking a risk after kissing and deciding to give a relationship a go and here we are!!
How did you get engaged, is there a cool story?
My Grandad was a lighthouse keeper in Scotland so I spent all my childhood summers up there visiting them and many of the lighthouses he used to work at. Mabs had never been to Scotland so in April 2018 we decided to visit Edinburgh and whilst there, return to Stonehaven where my grandparents lived. I hadn’t been there for over 10 years. We got to the train station and I showed Mabs the little town explaining everywhere we used to visit whilst we were there and some fun family stories. Just outside Stonehaven there is an amazing castle ruin on an island with steep stairs on a windy path that Mabs had seen a picture of my Grandad and I at when I was 8. We got the bus there and were so lucky as it was bright sunshine. I was taking pictures of the ruin and Mabs kept saying emotional things about us being together, but I was pretty much ignoring him wondering why he was being so emotional whilst I was trying to get a good photo, I turned round and he was down on one knee with a ring. I was not expecting it at all! I did some ugly crying and then we rang my mum who was waiting by her phone. So Mabs has made an already special place to me even more special!
What made you choose your wedding venue, did you look at many?
We had looked at lots of venues online but this was the only one we actually went and saw, we loved it straight away. When we found out it had a waiting list until 2021 that didn’t put us off! I rang a couple of weeks later with a question and they had just had a cancellation for 2019! We booked it immediately and suddenly our wedding had gone from 3 years away to the following year.
What was the inspiration/theme of your wedding?
Our theme is “barn”, we really wanted to make the most of the beautiful barns they have at Cooling, so chose neutral and pastel colours with hand decorated jars and blossom trees as our main decoration. Our inspiration was just having all our close family and friends together to enjoy the day. We aren’t very good at being centre of attention so we really wanted everyone to have an amazing day. Some of the decorations and our favours our inspired by our grandparents.
What is your first song and why?
We have a very unusual first song choice, not many people know it. It is Dela by Johnny Clegg. We don’t really have “a song” but this song never fails to make us smile and dance and it always makes us think of each other. If you have seen George of the Jungle(!) you might have heard it..!
What would be your number one tip to other couples planning their wedding?
Do not stress about it! We know it seems easy to say but it is definitely all about the people and choosing things that make the day special to you. We really loved every moment of planning it, we don’t know what we are going to do with our time now!!
